In Major Update, Advanced Custom Fields 6.1 Lets Users Register Custom Post Types and Custom Taxonomies
The new features will help developers minimize the number of plugins and custom code required to scaffold their content model.
Today, WP Engine announced the release of Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) version 6.1, which, for the first time, allows users to register custom post types and custom taxonomies from within the plugin.
This significant expansion of the plugin’s capabilities represents the next generation of ACF, which is relied upon by more than 4.5 million users around the world as the standard method for assigning custom metadata in WordPress. The new features are available in both the free version of the plugin on wordpress.org as well as ACF PRO.
Bringing these features together means site developers can now minimize the number of plugins and/or additional code they need to rely on when scaffolding their content model.
“It’s hard to find a WordPress developer who hasn’t worked with ACF,” said WP Engine Product Marketing Manager Rob Stinson. “It’s exciting to bring this level of new value to a product that is already so beloved and central to so many WordPress tech stacks.”
Since ACF was acquired by WP Engine along with other Delicious Brains products in mid-2022, the 6.1 release of ACF is representative of WP Engine’s commitment to serving as custodians of a plugin that has helped bring tremendous growth and value to the WordPress community and wider plugin ecosystem.
Streamlining the Preferred Development Workflow
Custom post types and custom taxonomies are widely used by developers to organize and manage different types of content, link portfolios, testimonials, events, or other custom content required for a specific project.
“Registering custom post types and creating custom fields go hand in hand,” said WP Engine Senior Product Manager Iain Poulson.
“It’s a workflow our users constantly leverage on classic, block-based, and headless WordPress site builds, but now they can do this right from ACF without touching code or using another plugin.”
The extended functionality is expected to save developers countless hours and decrease the margin of error that comes from switching back and forth between different plugins or command lines.
“Ultimately, we’re following our users’ lead and adding improvements that can benefit the development workflows they’re already using,” Stinson said.
